Dermal Fillers
Dermal Fillers can be injected under the skin to fill out lines from the underside. This plumps the skin out, restoring the loss of tissue that makes wrinkling so common with age. it is important you choose one that has the reputation and a ‘track-record’ of being safe and long-lasting. One major concern is that some non-medical clinics are offering ‘counterfeit injectables’ which have the potential to cause serious reactions.

To simplify the understanding of all the Dermal Fillers currently available, you must first appreciate that Dermal Fillers can be broadly divided into two categories according to how long the correction should last:
1. Non-Permanent – durations in the order of 9-18 months but often longer.
In this ‘Non-Permanent’ category, we only recommend those Dermal Fillers that contain as their active ingredient, the identical polysaccharide (complex sugar chain) present in ALL human and animal skin. Therefore, as these Dermal Fillers are chemically identical to your own skin’s ‘natural filler’, the risk of an allergic reaction is negligible and accordingly no pre-treatment skin testing is required.
We believe that this group of Dermal Fillers has major advantages because they:
- provide excellent correction
- have a proven safety record
- are not of animal origin
- require no pre-treatment testing for allergy
- deliver a worthwhile duration of correction: 6-18 months, often longer
2. Permanent
‘Permanent’ & ‘Semi-Permanent’ Fillers of various brand names are the other type of Dermal Filler on the market. However, because of both anecdotal and documented reports of permanent complications with Permanent Fillers we have never used or advocated the use of these fillers.
How Do They Work?
Dermal Fillers rejuvenate the face simply by filling out wrinkles and furrows, or restoring lost volume in facial ‘hollows’.
What Do They Contain?
The ‘Non-Permanent’ Dermal Fillers we recommend for safety reasons all contain a polysaccharide (complex sugar chain) chemically identical to that found in ALL human and animal skin. In skin, this polysaccharide creates volume and forms an important component of the ‘ground substance’ – the medium in which the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres lay.
Most importantly, these fillers are NOT of animal origin. Instead, the polysaccharide is manufactured synthetically but is still identical to that found in human skin.
Are Some People Allergic To It?
As the fillers we recommend contain the identical polysaccharide to that in your own skin and are free of animal proteins, the risk of an allergic reaction is so negligible that treatments can be performed without first testing the skin for pre-existing allergy.
